Waziri Mkuu Mstaafu Mizengo Pinda Apongeza Uwezeshaji Unaofanywa Na Benki Ya CRDB Kwa Wanawake

Waziri Mkuu Mstaafu Mhe.

Waziri Mkuu Mstaafu Mhe.

Managing your investments during a period of turmoil

By Vimal Kumar, Chief Executive: Retail and Business Banking, Digital and Customer Experience, Absa Regional Operations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every sector of society across the globe, with everyone impacted from an economic, health and social perspective. While the majority of people have focused on stability and job security during this period, affluent and high-net-worth individuals (HNWI) saw an erosion to their personal net worth as economic activity and investments deteriorated during the pandemic.

As individuals tried to remain as liquid as possible during this period, some of the key trends reflected were the shifting of deposits to secure banks, while automation and digitalisation were further embraced to offer customers the convenience and flexibility to manage their investments at their convenience.

How has COVID-19 affected investors?

The tremendous uncertainty has caused cascading waves of destruction across global economies, and impacted many in the high-net-worth individual (HNWI) and affluent brackets.

COVID-19 has affected all parts of society. In comparison to the working class, where the focus is holding onto jobs, high net worth individuals have been heavily impacted due to the wealth destruction that is occurring. Investors are seeing erosion in personal net worth and a good percentage are worried about consumer confidence due to the global recession, job losses and reduction of investments into economies.

Industries such as real estate, stock markets and mutual funds have suffered significant depreciation. Individuals who leveraged off investments during periods where the economy was stronger are feeling the pinch in many ways trying to keep themselves as liquid as possible. A few of the ways we are seeing this happen is through delaying investments and shifting cash holdings from local to foreign currency.

One of the key trends we are seeing is the significant movement in balances and deposits to secure banks such as Absa demonstrating confidence in the financial sector. Unlike the global financial crisis of 2008 where financial institutions were part of the problem, during COVID-19 banks were part of the solution.

Absa was one of the first banks to respond in the way of relief and payment solutions for all customer segments including suppliers, vendors, SMEs and our high net worth individuals. Through collaborating with stakeholders to build and grow economies, we are ensuring sustainable recovery of this economic downturn. Along with other banks, we have been playing a crucial role in facilitating the movement of funds and ensuring government programmes are utilised effectively, as well as passing on regulatory changes such as lower lending rates very quickly.

Where to from here?

There is a great opportunity for Africa to create an intercontinental supply chain framework. The over dependence on single commodity exports and raw material into the rest of the world is what exacerbates an economic crisis in a continent like Africa.

The free trade agreement is coming at the right time and should spur the movement of commodities on the continent. However, there is a need for governments to come together to shift the conversation to one where the African continent also starts to become a manufacturing hub creating growth and wealth.

Creating the regional trade networks gives Africa the right opportunity to step into becoming more self-reliant because the upcoming trends will see regional trade routes and continental trade routes strengthening while global supply chains begin to weaken.

The macro-economic picture – the bad and the good

Economic forecasting is difficult in an environment that is so fluid, as proven by the second wave of COVID-19 infections which is now sweeping across large parts of Europe. Questions arise as to whether countries or areas should go under lockdown again and what the economic impact of such decisions would be.

How a country will come out of the pandemic will depend on the economic conditions of that country going into the pandemic. Those that were in a deteriorated condition, will likely to be in a devastated state by the end of the cycle.

Such countries may look to debt waivers as a short-term relief option. Whatever the benefits, the long term affects for these fragile economies far outweigh the positive. When countries seek debt waivers, their external ratings drastically drop in the eyes of investors and trading agencies causing them to become less attractive and lead to more expensive investments in the future.

There have been recommendations made to see the G20 consider converting debt into equity in projects instead of a blanket waiver of liabilities. It then allows more buy in from investors and the countries benefiting from the programmes are not required to service the debt but rather build equity.

The second easy go-to option for countries, but which is equally as damaging, is to print money in a bid to stimulate the economy. Printing money can work in certain instances where a country and its economy is strong enough to support such a measure, but in many cases – particularly for fragile economies – this can spell doom as hyperinflation takes root.

The new normal

We still have a long way to go as we adjust to navigating the complexity of the COVID-19 pandemic. However what is clear and evident is that the pandemic has resulted in the banking and financial services sector shifting to a much leaner and optimised way of engaging and managing customers’ needs and expectations. We have further embraced automation and digitalisation in our efforts to offer our customers the flexibility and instruments to manage their investments at their convenience.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone on the continent, but it has also presented windows of opportunities for exploring new growth avenues and the potential to rebuild even stronger.

There are no easy paths or get-rich-quick schemes on the right path to managing wealth. Be clear of your risk appetite, seek advice of experts and taking a long term view often looks past short term market highs and lows.

Absa Bank Tanzania Head of Business Banking, Melvin Saprapasen speaking to participants during a training session hosted by Absa to its SME customers in Dar es Salaam.

By Staff Writer

Absa Bank Tanzania is finalizing the process of initiating a new product before the end of this year to serve the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) with affordable loans.

Farida Kamala, Absa Bank Tanzania, Relationship Manager, revealed the plan at a special workshop that brought the bank’s clients most of them being SMEs with businesses of a turnover range between 20million/- and 100million/- to have them educated on critical issues related to financial management so us they grow to big businesses.

The bank organized the event held in Dar es Salaam last week in collaboration with Deloitte that brought with it auditors, tax and finance experts to educate SMEs on critical issues they should consider to grow their businesses.

There was a delay for the bank to come up with products targeting SMEs due to a cross section of shortcomings. We are finalizing arrangements of the loan scheme for SMEs at least starting with those who manage a turnover of 50million/- annually. One need to bank with us for at least six months to qualify for the loans issued through this scheme” she explained.

About 200 SMEs were brought together at the workshop and got exposed to knowledge to bridge gap analysis in the angles of tax, audit, business plan, financial reporting and real time performance insights.

Most of SMEs being start-ups or family businesses fail because of credit risk expenditure and lack of knowledge to manage limited revenue growth, maintaining business continuity and succession arrangements” affirmed Kamala.

Addressing SMEs on tax related issues, Festo Bartholomew, Senior Manager Tax Deloitte, advised them on the importance of preparing and keeping accounting records of their businesses. He said that most small and medium businesses fail due to delay in tax payment hence creating accrued charges and penalties.

One of the key facts to make your business grow big is filling provisional and income returns of every quarter even those of minor expenses related to the referred business. SMEs must build the culture of tax planning to determine your effective tax rate margin. Consultation of experts is needed to protect yourself from getting into problem with the revenue authority by incurring unnecessary penalties” he warned.

TANZANIA’S TELECOMS SECTOR: A POWERFUL FORCE FOR POSITIVE ECONOMIC CHANGE

Ndechao Sangawe | UDBS | The scale of technological change continues to unfold at a dramatic pace. Today, many of the advances in mobile-assisted technology would have not been imaginable at the beginning of the 21st century.

As these advances take place, it is not surprising that the overall data traffic is on the rise and is set to continue to increase in years to come. For example, research released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development suggests that global data traffic is set to increase from 46,000 GB per second in 2017 to 150,700 GB per second by 2022.

Given Africa’s young and growing population, it is easy to see how these countries’ citizens will play a significant part in the upward trajectory of global data traffic.

For Tanzania specifically, it is fair to say that digitalization has emerged a key trend for a number of years now. Indeed, the country has seen its digital landscape grow from strength to strength as more and more people seek to take advantage of the benefits that digital tech affords.

For example, this summer, the TCRA announced that the overall use of mobile money in Tanzania continues to rise, with the total number of registered accounts rising from over 27 million in April to 29 million by the end of June.

This growth shows that mobile money has become an essential tool for how people manage their finances.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that this is also the result of the efforts made by the country’s telecoms sector to invest in services and technology that suit the needs of their customers.

One good example is Tigo Tanzania. Tigo’s mobile money service – Tigo Pesa – has provided its customers with a fast and reliable method for depositing and transferring money.

In addition, Tigo Pesa removes the need for customers to make regular trips to the banks, meaning customers can keep track of their finances simply through the click of a button.

Services like Tigo Pesa provide countless customers with a new way of managing their finances.

Tanzania’s telecoms sector has shown that it is a powerful force for positive change.

Going forward, it is now more important than ever that stakeholders come together to provide the necessary support for the sector through sensible regulation and mutual cooperation. This will not only help ensure telecoms operators can better serve future customers, but also ensure that positive impacts of the sector continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

TWIGA A TRIUMPH OF PARTNERSHIP

Barrick President and Chief Executive, Mark Bristow addresses a media conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 23rd October this year about the success story of Twiga Mineral Corporation. Twiga is a joint venture between Barrick and the Government of Tanzania.
Members of international and Tanzania local media at work during the Barrick President and Chief Executive, Mark Bristow press conference in Dar es Salaam on 23rd October this year. Twiga is a joint venture between Barrick and the Government of Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam | Tanzania | Barely a year after it was established, Twiga Minerals Corporation has demonstrated the value-creating capacity of a true partnership between a mining company and its host nation, Barrick president and chief executive Mark Bristow said here today at a press briefing following his quarterly mine visits.

Twiga is a joint venture between Barrick and the Government of Tanzania, and oversees the management of Barrick’s assets in the country as well as the implementation of the economic benefit-sharing agreement. It was formed when Barrick took over the operations of the former Acacia Mining in September last year and subsequently entered into a framework agreement with the government. In terms of the agreement, Barrick will pay the government $300 million to settle past disputes with Acacia.

In addition to the first $100 million tranche of the settlement, Barrick’s assets in Tanzania have since paid more than $200 million to the government in taxes and royalties, and last week Twiga declared a maiden interim dividend of $250 million.

The fact that so much value has been delivered in such a short time is a tribute to the power of what I believe is the first partnership of its kind in Africa. With the framework agreement now fully implemented, we have settled most of the landowner disputes and are well on our way to ensure that we are fully compliant with our environmental permits as well as with the government’s local content legislation,” Bristow said.

A rehabilitated and re-energized North Mara is ahead of plan in the year to date and Bulyanhulu has resumed underground mining operations and is scheduled to restart processing of underground ore by the end of 2020 as a long-life underground mine. We are gearing up to potentially make North Mara and Bulyanhulu into a combined Tier One complex, capable of producing at least 500,000 ounces of gold annually for more than 10 years in the lower half of the industry’s cost profile1. We shall also be looking to expand the life of operations as well as other new Tanzanian opportunities within the Twiga framework.

Barrick has been awarded 10 new exploration licenses in Tanzania and plans to spend $8 million on exploration there this year.

The company’s commitment to stakeholder partnership encompasses its host communities and a community development committee has already been established at North Mara. On the environmental front, a comprehensive water management plan is being implemented. Since Barrick assumed operational control in 2019 some 50% of the water in the North Mara tailings dam has been removed to date.
